My dear child,

I am Sandman, and you might know about me that I come by your eyelashes and bring sleep to every child, even to the most active ones.

I am no taller than the middle finger on your right hand. And the hat I wear, that has a tassel and it is also known as a nightcap, makes my invisible. That means... you can’t see me!

And do you know why I’m invisible? Because I am kind of afraid of cats. When a cat sees me, Bang!, it throws itself to me and knocks me down. They must think I am some kind of toy, or a mouse, ha, ha! I am also afraid of sparrows. I even had my nose pinched by one!

And the children! The children wouldn’t  go to sleep if they saw me! They would have me telling them stories and performing magic tricks!. Like in a show! And they are no longer sleepy!

Well, let me tell you now about Mister Sleep: he is a kind of magician who comes by the eyelashes. He makes your eyelids close, your mind dream, your body rest and grow. It’s sooo good to sleep!

And he wouldn’t come by his own, as I taught him to, I need to help him. With magic sleep dust.

This magic dust is a kind of golden sand I use to put on children’s lashes before they go to sleep. Sometimes I give it to your mom or dad to use it. But do you know what happens then? Well, sometimes parents confuse things. And, instead of giving the sand to the child, they drop it on their own eyelashes. That is why sometimes the parents fall asleep before their children-because they get confused. Eh, we forgive them. They might be tired too, right?

Now let me tell you what happened one day.

It had been a busy night for me, as I had visited all the children in the world to give them  the magic sleep dust to them. Because Mr. Sleep hadn’t been able to join me. He was on a trip to the Moon and he forgot to come back.

As I had to visit all the children in the world, in order to make them fall asleep, I was very tired. And it’s only in the morning that I’d go to sleep.

Not long after that, what do you think happened? It was lunch time, when all the children had to take their nap. Well, guess where Mr. Sleep was? On a new trip, to the Moon! He must have really liked that trip!

So I had to take my bag with magic sleep dust and visit all the children again. As I was still sleepy, I tripped on a toy that was lying on the floor and ended up with my nose in the magic sleep dust! Bang! My eyes, too! And my whole face! Well, what do you thing happened next? I fell asleep right away!

Mr. Sleep was on a trip, the magic dust was spread on the floor, and I was deeply asleep…

And what do you think happened to all the children that couldn’t go to sleep?

Well, in that day no child on Earth could take the afternoon nap. No matter how hard their parents and teachers tried to convince them to stay in bed, to listen to stories and close their eyes, not a single child fell asleep.

In the evening, Mr.Sleep decided to end his trip. He was shocked to see all the tired, grumpy and picky children that hadn’t taken their nap. And I was...well, gone.

“What happened to Sandman?” - Mr. Sleep wondered.

And he began to look for me. He has some kind of phone that shows him, on a big map, where all the awake children are and...where I am. Each bedroom with a tired child is marked by a red dot. First of all, he went and put all the children to sleep. Poor kids, they were so tired after a whole day of playing!

When he almost finished, he found me, sleeping, hugging the toy I had tripped on. I was having such a nice dream!

He was so happy when he found me! He pulled out of his bag a gemstone-like dust and blew it over me. It was the magic awakening dust!

I opened my eyes and almost cried out loud, happy to find him again. But Mr. Sleep hushed me: “The children are sleeping!” They were so cute!

“Come along, Sandman, let’s put the adults to sleep, too, and we’re done for the night, we can take a rest.

I am so glad you are ok! I thought something bad had happened to you!”

 “Well, I am glad YOU are back, Mr. Sleep, we’ve all missed you! I hope you’ve  enjoyed your trip!”

“Yes, I have! But it was more than a trip! I learned, together with the Toothfairy, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and Jack Frost, how to keep the beautiful dreams in the children’s sleep.

But this is yet another story. Now, let us get some sleep!”
